India has been a land which has surprised its inhabitants as well as the foreigners who came from outside with continuous gifts and varieties. Food in India is a royal affair and we if venture out to find more about the culinary affairs of India, we will be overwhelmed to see that the country and its various people have so much to offer.

- One of the best food facts of Indian food states that abiding by the theories on which Indians make food, there are 6 different types of flavors that a plate should comprise of which are sweet, salty, bitter, sour, astringent and spicy and a very balanced Indian platter would comprise of small quantities of all the flavors. Also, Indian food is segregated into three different parts namely Saatvic food which comprises of fresh juice and vegetables; Rajasic food which is made royally using a lot of oil and spices and Tamasic food which comprises of meat and alcohol.
- The food facts of India are varied but the fact that chutney is popular needs clarification. The concept of chutneys are so popular that not only in India but people in the British countries also love it. One of their most famous chutneys called Major Grey’s is still sold here as well.
- One of the most interesting facts of food in India is that it produces around 70% of the spices which is used all over the world. No other country is as varied in producing spices than India. However, certain products like saffron have been migrated to India as we did not initially have it in our country. Also, other food products that we have today like the tomatoes and the chillies are also an outcome of the foreign migrations that happened here. Even the most humble sugar was not used in India as a sweetening agent before. People here used fruits and honey to make their dishes sweet but after the Portuguese came in, we started using sugar as a sweetener.
- Desserts or Mitha is an integral part of the Indian cuisine as a result of which the sweetmeat variety is huge in this country. In the southern parts of India, the dessert which they absolutely can’t do without is payasam and it is considered there that no weddings are complete without the serving of payasam. Payasam is actually popular all throughout the country but it is just that we have different names to denote it, for example, paayesh in West Bengal, Kheer in North India.
- Lastly, we must remember that the people in India do everything from the scratch, kneading the doughs to make a roti or drying spices in the terrace to grind masalas out of it and one more thing please, we do not really have anything called the curry powder. We make curries using the different spice powders to regulate their taste, colour and create the much-needed flavour.
